What We Do

There are several ways to help in the fight against tobacco. The Utah Tobacco-Free Alliance works in the following ways:

General Meeting

General UTFA members meet each quarter to discuss tobacco issues in Utah and coordinate tobacco prevention and cessation at a grassroots level. (See Calendar for location, dates, and times)

The UTFA Workgroup

UTFA members meet regularly to work on the goals of preventing Utahns from starting tobacco use, supporting those who want to quit, and reducing tobacco's burden on our health care system and businesses. Meetings occur virtually every other Thursday at 2:00 PM. The workgroup develops talking points for policy action and seeks opportunities to table and present at conferences serving both the business and healthcare communities.

Policy & Community Advocacy
We advocate for evidence-based policies at the local and state levels, including zoning restrictions on tobacco retailers near schools and community locations, smoke-free environments (including Utah's 100% smoke-free SLC airport), regulation and taxation of electronic cigarettes, and Tobacco 21 laws that raise the legal purchase age.

Clinical & Health Systems
We partner with clinicians and healthcare systems to strengthen prevention and cessation efforts, including promoting youth-focused cessation services (My Life, My Quit), evidence-based provider training modules, the Dimensions Tobacco Free Program, and Utah Quit Services (1-800-QUITNOW / waytoquit.org) in coordination with the Utah Cancer Coalition.

Business Engagement
We help Utah businesses adopt comprehensive tobacco prevention and cessation policies that protect employees, customers, and youth — saving money, increasing productivity, and building community goodwill. We provide updates on current state laws and connect businesses with relevant resources.
